Henry, following the peace concluded in 1544…
June 1546 CE
Henry, following the peace concluded in 1544 by the Emperor with Francis, in June 1546 makes peace with France, forcing Francis to recognize by treaty England’s control of Boulogne (Boulogne sur Mer).
The war has been exorbitantly expensive, having cost the English crown two million pounds; for both Francis and Henry it has been the costliest conflict of their reigns.
The need for funds leads in England to what twentieth century-historian Geoffrey Elton will term "an unprecedented burden of taxation", as well as the systematic debasement of coinage.
