1270 CE
Hethum I had abdicated in 1269 in favor of his son, and entered the Franciscan order, dying a year later.
The new king, Leo II, has been left in the awkward situation of keeping Cilicia as a subject of the Mongol Empire, while at the same time he paying tribute to the Mamluks.
Leo is known as a pious king, devoted to Christianity.
He pursues active commercial relations with the West, by renewing trade agreements with the Italians and establishing new ones with the Catalans.
He also endeavors to reinforce the Mongol alliance, as his father Hethum I had submitted Armenia to Mongol authority in 1247.
