December 1821 CE
Thomas De Quincey goes to London in 1821 to dispose of some translations from German authors, but is persuaded first to write and publish an account of his opium experiences, which this year appear in the London Magazine.
This new sensation eclipses Charles Lamb's Essays of Elia, which are at this time appearing in the same periodical.
The Confessions of an English Opium-Eater are soon published in book form.
De Quincey then makes literary acquaintances.
From this time on, De Quincey will maintain himself by contributing to various magazines.
