The gunboats and armed steamers attack the seaport of Taganrog, the most important hub near Rostov on Don, on May 21, 1855.

The vast amounts of food, especially bread, wheat, barley and rye that had been amassed in the city after the outbreak of war, are prevented from being exported.

The Governor of Taganrog, Yegor Tolstoy, and lieutenant-general Ivan Krasnov refuse an allied ultimatum, responding that "Russians never surrender their cities".

The Anglo–French squadron bombards Taganrog for sixty-one and a half hours and lands three hundred troops near the Old Stairway in the center of Taganrog, but they are thrown back by Don Cossacks and a volunteer corps.
