In January 1996, Khun Sa, called "the opium king" and thought to be one of the most powerful drug warlords of Myanmar's Shan States, "surrenders" to SLORC, the ruling junta regime.
US officials suspects that the agreement between SLORC and Khun Sa includes a deal allowing him to retain control of his opium trade but in exchange end his 30-year-old insurrection against the government.
