May 1881 CE
Italy, with her own substantial interests in Tunisia, protests but will not risk a confrontation with France.
The French invaders force Bey Muhammad III as-Sadiq on May 12, 1881, to sign the Bardo Treaty, the first of a series of treaties granting France a protectorate over Tunisia.
These documents provide that the Bey continue as head of state, but with the French given effective control over a great deal of Tunisian governance, in the form of a protectorate.
