The Knights Templar order is very powerful in England, with the Master of the Temple sitting in parliament as primus baro (the first baron of the realm).

The Temple compound in London is regularly used as a residence by kings and by legates of the Pope.

The Temple also served as an early depository bank, sometimes in defiance of the Crown's wishes to seize the funds of nobles who had entrusted their wealth there.

The independence and wealth of the order throughout Europe is considered by most historians to have been the primary cause of its eventual downfall.

William Marshall (who is buried in the nave next to his sons, under one of the nine marble effigies of medieval knights there) serves in January 1215 as a negotiator during a meeting in the Temple between King John and the barons, who demand that John uphold the rights enshrined in the Coronation Charter of his predecessor Richard I. William swears on behalf of the king that the grievances of the barons will be addressed in the summer, leading to John's signing of Magna Carta in June.

Following the siege of Lavaur, Bishop Folques had traveled north to France, where he had preached the Crusade alongside Guy of les Vaux-de-Cernay.

He had then returned to the south, participating in the Council of Pamiers in November 1212, in the Council of Lavaur in January 1213, in the meeting with Peter II of Aragon in January 1213, at the Battle of Muret in September 1213, and at the Council of Montpellier in January 1215.

There he had been instructed by the Papal legate, Peter of Benevento, to take possession of the Château Narbonnais, the Count's residence, at Toulouse; thus, he finally returns to the city in February 1215.
