1341 BCE to 1198 BCE
Untash-Napirisha ascends the Elamite throne in 1265, concurrent with the so-called Elamite Middle Period, an era of increasing power and prosperity that had begun around 1300 and sees a surge of spectacular architecture and sculpture at such Elamite centers as Dur Untash.
Although construction in this religious city complex abruptly ends after Untash-Napirisha's death, the site is not abandoned, but will continue to be occupied until the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal destroys it in 640 BCE.
Some scholars speculate, based on the large number of temples and sanctuaries at Choqa Zanbil, that Untash-Napirisha attempted to create a new religious center (possibly intended to replace Susa) that would unite the gods of both highland and lowland Elam at one site.
