Polish forces have been retreating for weeks,…
June 1792 CE
Wielhorski's unit had been defeated on June 14 at the Battle of Boruszkowce.
The joined Polish forces had reached Połonne the following day.
After a meeting, the Polish commanders had decided to withdraw because they have no possibility of defending a town that lacks fortifications.
Poniatowski had finally received the awaited reinforcements, about two thousand troops led by Michał Lubomirski, on June 17.
The next day the Poles, led by Prince Poniatowski, defeat one of the Russian formations of general Irakly Morkov at the Battle of Zieleńce.
It is a tactical victory, without much strategic implications.
Polish losses are significant; soldiers lack ammunition and food.
After the Polish withdrawal, Morkov moves onto the battlefield and announces himself the victor.
The Russians nonetheless have sustained heavier losses, and are significantly delayed in their pursuit of the Polish forces.
The captured Russian banner is sent to Warsaw.
To commemorate this victory, Polish king Stanisław II Augustus will create the order of Virtuti Militari and award it to a number of Polish commanders who had participated in the battle.
