Magnesium is known originally through such compounds…
1618 CE
Magnesium is known originally through such compounds as Epsom salts, magnesia (the oxide) and the carbonate (magnesia alba).
The oxide is probably named for the district in Asia Minor where magnesium oxide is first obtained.
A farmer at Epsom in England attempts in 1618 to give his cows water from a well there.
The cows refuse to drink because of the water's bitter taste, but the farmer notices that the water seems to heal scratches and rashes.
The substance becomes known as Epsom salts and its fame spreads.
It is eventually recognized as hydrated magnesium sulfate, MgSO4·7 H2O.
