Medieval English law has long prohibited the charging of interest, identifying the practice as usury, which had been condemned by Aristotle, Plato, and the early Christian church, and frowned upon by the Old Testament.
English law, having now broken with Catholic dogma in other respects, redefines usury in 1545 as high interest rates, and low interest rates now become legal.
