Riel, with the settlement now solidly behind him, proposes the formation of a new convention of forty representatives, split evenly between French- and English-speaking settlers, to consider Smith's instructions.

On January 9 many prisoners had escaped from the prison at Fort Garry, including Charles Mair, Thomas Scott and ten others.
