March 1857 CE
The Constitution stirs deep unrest among the Roman Catholic clergy and the overwhelming majority of devout Catholics.
Anybody who swears allegiance to the Constitution (as all military and government officials are required to do) is ipso facto excommunicated by the Catholic church in March.
This means that they will not be allowed access to the sacraments, even in imminent danger of death.
Since salvation of the soul is not possible for the offenders, this is a major issue among Catholics.
