Infighting had continued after the murder of Fletcher Christian and five fellow mutineers in Pitcairn Island, and the six Tahitian men are all dead by 1794, killed by the widows of the murdered mutineers or by each other.

Two of the four surviving mutineers, Young and Adams, assume leadership and secure a tenuous calm, which is disrupted by the drunkenness of McCoy and Quintal after the former distills an alcoholic beverage from a local plant.

Some of the women attempt to leave the island in a makeshift boat, but cannot launch it successfully.
