One of the new cities of Magna Graecia, Locri Epizephyrii (the Locrians who live next to the [Cape] Zephyrium, called thus to distinguish themselves from the Locri of Greece) is the first Greek community to have a written code of laws, given by Zaleucus around 660 BCE.
He decrees that anyone who proposes a change in the laws should do so with a noose about their neck, with which they should be hanged if the amendment did not pass.
