Oxford University had become involved in the print trade around 1480, and has grown into a major printer of Bibles, prayer books, and scholarly works.
The Cambridge University Press charter from 1534 gives it the right to print "all manner of books," and Oxford University Press receives a similar right when it is chartered in 1634 to become the second of the privileged presses.
They are called this because, under letters patent issued by the Crown defining their charters, only they have the right to print and publish the Book of Common Prayer and the Authorized Version of the Bible in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
In addition both presses, by virtue of a separate set of letters patent, hold the explicit right to print the Authorized Version.
Oxford University Press (OUP) is today the largest university press in the world.

Worried that his brother Tokugawa Tadanaga might assassinate him, however, he has ruled carefully until that brother's death by seppuku in 1633.
Hidetada had left his advisors, all veteran daimyo, to act as regents for Iemitsu.
