Strategic Importance of English-Held Cities in Brittany
- Brest – A vital port on the Atlantic, allowing the English to reinforce and resupply their forces in Brittany.
- Quimper – The capital of Cornouaille, controlling access to western Brittany and a center of trade and commerce.
- Vannes – A key stronghold in southern Brittany, enabling English forces to exert influence inland and along the coast.
With these cities under English control, the Montfortist faction, led by John of Montfort’s supporters and backed by England, gained a decisive advantage over the Blois faction, which was weakened after Charles of Blois’s capture in 1347.
