Raphael, completing the frescoes for the Stanza…
July 1514 CE
Raphael, completing the frescoes for the Stanza d'Eliodoro by mid-1514, depicts four historical events illustrating salvation of the church through divine intervention.
In three of these frescoes, Raphael portrays either Julius II or his successor, Leo X.
The fourth fresco represents the miraculous liberation of the first pope, Saint Peter, from prison.
The Portrait of Bindo Altoviti, a painting finished around 1515 by Raphael, portrays a rich banker born in Rome in 1491, but of Florentine origin, a cultured man who loves the arts.
The graceful, almost effeminate position of the subject along with the heavy contrast between light and shadow are atypical of Raphael's work, particularly of his portraits of men, demonstrating the artist's experimentation with different styles and forms in his later Roman period.
The influence of the works of Leonardo, which Raphael studies astutely during this period of his career, are strikingly evident in this particular piece.
It is housed in the National Gallery of Art of Washington, D.C., United States.
