Sicily’s first university is founded on October 19, 1434, by King Alfonso V of Aragon (who is also King Alfonso I of Sicily).

A charter is granted after two royal councilors (Adamo Asmundo and Battista Platamone) persuade the king to accept the founding of a Studium Generale in Catania.
