December 1679 CE
Stafford on December 7 is condemned to death and on December 23 beheaded.
The evidence against Arundell and his three fellow-prisoners is ordered to be in readiness on December 30, but here public proceedings stop.
Petre will die in 1683 in the Tower.
His companions will remain there until February 12, 1684 (i.e., for five years and nearly four months), when an appeal to the court of King's Bench to release them on bail succeeds.
Arundell, Powis, and Belasyse will on May 21, 1685, come to the House of Lords to present petitions for the annulling of the charges against them, and on the following day the petitions will be granted.
Their liberty will be formally assured them on June 1, 1685, on the ground that the witnesses against them had perjured themselves, and on June 4 the bill of attainder against Stafford will be reversed.
