The Almohad Sultan Abd al-Mu'min fortifies Gibraltar…
July 1160 CE
The Almohad Sultan Abd al-Mu'min fortifies Gibraltar for the first time in response to the coastal threat posed by the Christian kings of Aragon and Castile in 1160.
Gibraltar is renamed Djebel al-Fath (the Mount of Victory), though this name does not persist, and a fortified town named Medinat al-Fath (the City of Victory) is laid out on the upper slopes of the Rock.
On completion of the works in the town, the Sultan crosses the Strait to inspect the works and stays in Gibraltar for two months.
It is unclear how much of Medinat al-Fath was actually built, as the surviving archaeological remains are scanty.
The Tower of Homage of the Moorish Castle remains standing today.
