The bishops take Paschal prisoner for some…
April 1111 CE
The bishops take Paschal prisoner for some weeks, compelling him to retract this agreement.
Henry, having entered Rome and sworn the usual oaths, presents himself at St. Peter's Basilica on February 12, 1111 for his coronation and the ratification of the treaty.
The words commanding the clergy to restore the fiefs of the crown to Henry are read amid a tumult of indignation, whereupon the pope refuses to crown the king, who in return declines to hand over his renunciation of the right of investiture.
Paschal, along with sixteen cardinals, is seized by Henry's soldiers and, in the general disorder which follows, an attempt to liberate the pontiff is thwarted in a struggle during which the king himself is wounded.
Henry then arrests Paschal and imprisons him at Ponte Mammolo, an experience that serves to change the pope’s mind about granting full investiture rights to Henry.
A Norman army of three hundred sent by Prince Robert I of Capua to rescue the papists is turned back at Ferentino by the imperialist Count Ptolemy of Tusculum, the most powerful secular nobleman in Latium.
Paschal's failure to obtain assistance draws from him a confirmation of the king's right of investiture and a promise to crown him emperor.
The coronation ceremony accordingly takes place on April 13, after which the emperor returns to Germany.
