The Church of San Giorgio Maggiore in…
1565 CE
The Church of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, designed by Andrea Palladio and begun 1565, features giant columns articulated on a grand scale beneath a pediment with another, smaller pediment split and placed in support on either side over smaller columns.
Construction of the façade, initially under the supervision of Simone Sorella, will not commence until 1599.
The stonemason's contract provides that it is to follow Palladio's model and there will be only minor changes.
Completed in 1610, thirty years after Palladio’s death, the church is a basilica in the classical renaissance style.
Its brilliant white marble gleams above the blue water of the lagoon opposite the Piazzetta, forming the focal point of the view from every part of the Riva degli Schiavoni.
