The incapacity of Afghanistan's new Amir notwithstanding, the real leaders, Abdur Rahman and his uncle, despite some jealousy between them, again rout Sher Ali's forces, and occupy Kandahar in 1867.

When Afzal Khan dies at the end of the year, Azam Khan becomes the new ruler, with Abdur Rahman as his governor in the northern province.
