The Ottomans, cooperating with the Mamluks against…
April 1514 CE
The Ottomans, cooperating with the Mamluks against the Portuguese from 1514, provide an Ottoman commander in the person of Selman Reis, as well as firearms.
Entering Mamluk service, Selman Reis leads a group of two thousand armed Levantines, possibly against the wishes of the Ottoman Sultan Selim I, and meets with this force with the Sultan Qansuh at Suez in April 1514.
Artillery defenses are also established in Jiddah and Alexandria.
This concentration on the Portuguese front has the ultimate effect however of weakening the Mamluk strengths that can be put against the Ottomans in the Levant.
The investment is huge, as the fleet costs the Mamluk Sultan around four hundred thousand dinars.
