The Roman Republic, led by Mazzini and Garibaldi, holds out until July 3 against a French army sent by Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, the new president of the French Republic, whose restoration of the papacy thus repays his Roman Catholic supporters.
The returning sovereigns rapidly set about abrogating constitutions, disbanding parliaments, and, especially in the south, filling the prisons.
