The final assault is made on September 5, when another French bombardment (the sixth) is followed by an assault by the French Army on September 8, resulting in the capture of the Malakoff by the French.

The Russians fail to retake it and their defenses collapse.

Meanwhile, the British capture the Great Redan, just south of the city of Sevastopol.
