The second phase of the Greek War…
1825 CE
The second phase of the Greek War of Independence begins in 1824, when the Porte enlists the assistance of Muhammad 'Ali, Ottoman viceroy and pasha of Egypt from 1805, to launch a two-pronged counteroffensive.
The sultan's forces march from the north while the army of Muhammad 'Ali establishes a base at Messini on the south shore of the Peloponnesus and then advances northward.
The feuding Greek armies, caught between two superior forces, relinquish all the gains made in the first years of the war.
