The soldiers venture eastward onto the Great…
1581 CE
On the Pecos River near Santa Rosa, they encounter a rancheria of Querechos.
Four hundred men armed with bows and arrows come out to meet them, but Friar Rodriguez calms them.
The Spanish describe them as "naked"—uncivilized—people who hunt the buffalo.
A short distance further east they find the buffalo in many herds of two hundred to three hundred: killing about forty of them, they make jerky.
The Querechos are the people who will later be called Apaches.
