Ottoman policy in Anatolia has been directed…
1396 CE to 1539 CE
Ottoman policy in Anatolia has been directed toward consolidating the sultan's hold over the ghazi emirates by means of conquest, usurpation, and purchase.
The Ottomans are now confronted here by the forces of the Mongol leader Timur (Tamerlane), to whom many of the Turkish ghazis have defected.
Timur crushes Ottoman forces near Ankara in 1402 and captures Bayezid I.
The unfortunate sultan dies in captivity the next year, leaving four heirs, who for a decade compete for control of what remains of Ottoman Anatolia.
