Amin al-Husseini declares a “Government of All Palestine” in a small area on the Mediterranean coast that becomes known as the Gaza Strip, to which between one hundred and sixty thousand and one hundred and ninety-thousand Palestinian Arabs have fled.
Egypt retains control of, but does not annex, the region.
About three hundred thousand people live in the Gaza Strip, which is occupied by the Egyptian army.
