New Spain’s province of California, when Juan Bautista de Anza establishes the site for the Presidio of San Francisco on March 28, 1776, now extends from the southern tip of Baja to the San Francisco peninsula.
Anza directs Lieutenant Jose Joaquin Moraga, his second-in-command to lead a band of colonists from Monterey Presidio, who land on June 29 and construct the Mission Dolores of the new Presidio of San Francisco.
Father Francisco Palou founds Mission San Francisco de Asis in October.
