Savaria (present Szombathely), founded as the Pannonian capital in CE 45 by the Roman emperor Claudius at the intersection of two Roman roads (still extant), is made a Roman colony under the name of Colonia Claudia Savariensum (Claudius' Colony of Savarians).
The first city in the region of present Hungary, it lies close to the important "Amber Road" trade route.
The Danubian frontier remains disturbed, and Domitian wisely strengthens its garrisons; by the end of his reign in 96 it contains nine legions, as against the Rhineland's six, and Pannonia will soon become the military center of gravity of the empire.
Trajan divides the Pannonian province into Pannonia Superior (the western and northern districts), and Pannonia Inferior (the eastern) portion at some time between the years 102 and 107, between the first and second Dacian wars.
According to Ptolemy, these divisions are separated by a line drawn from Arrabona (Győr) in the north to Servitium (Gradiška) in the south; later, the boundary will be placed further east.
The whole country is sometimes called the Pannonias (Pannoniae).
Pannonia Prima is assimilated into the Huns’ territory by 427.
Rome will never regain control of this area, but it will remain a Roman province until the fall of the Ostrogothic Kingdom in 553.
