Cynthia Ann Parker
Anglo-American who is kidnapped in 1836, around age ten, by a Comanche war band
Cynthia Ann Parker (c. 1825 – March 1871), also known as Naduah (Comanche: Narua), is an Anglo-American who is kidnapped in 1836, around age ten, by a Comanche war band that had massacred her family's settlement.
Her Comanche name means "someone found."
Parker is adopted by the Comanche and lives with them for twenty-four years, completely forgetting her white ways.
She marries a Comanche chieftain, Peta Nocona, and has three children with him, including the last free Comanche chief, Quanah Parker.
At approximately age thirty-four, Parker is discovered and forcibly relocated by the Texas Rangers, but spends the remaining ten years of her life refusing to adjust to life in white society.
At least once, she escapes and tries to return to her Comanche family and children, but is again brought back to Texas.
She finds it difficult to understand her iconic status to the nation, which sees her as having been redeemed from the Comanches.
Heartbroken over the loss of her family, she stops eating and dies of influenza in 1871.
