1502 CE
After the Moorish Revolt—a rebellion by the vanquished Muslims of Granada against the forcible conversions carried out despite the Spanish crown's earlier guarantees of freedom of religion—a royal edict issued in 1502 requires all Muslims to accept baptism or go into exile.
Most Muslims choose conversion over abandonment of their ancestral homes, but their loyalty to the Spanish crown remains suspect.
Known as Moriscos and baptized as Christians, they continue to maintain their Arabic language and Islamic customs.
