The diplomatic compound will be under siege…
June 1900 CE
The diplomatic compound will be under siege by the Wuwei Rear Division of the Chinese Army and some Boxers (Yihetuan), for fifty-five days, from June 20 to August 14, 1900.
A total of four hundred and seventy-three foreign civilians, four hundred and nine soldiers from eight countries, and about three thousand Chinese Christians take refuge in the Legation Quarter.
Under the command of the British minister to China, Claude Maxwell MacDonald, the legation staff and security personnel defend the compound with small arms and one old muzzle-loaded cannon discovered and unearthed by Chinese Christians, who have turned it over to the Allies.
It is nicknamed the International Gun because the barrel is British, the carriage Italian, the shells Russian and the crew American.
