Burgundians, Imperials, and Kölners fraternize at first,…
June 1475 CE
Burgundians, Imperials, and Kölners fraternize at first, but the Germans soon begin to harass the Burgundians (the Kölners steal five Burgundian ships loaded with cannon), precipitating a sudden and violent assault on the unsuspecting Germans.
Sporadic fighting continues until the papal legate present at the siege threatens to excommunicate both Charles and Frederick unless they end the fighting; this threat, probably an idle one, enables the two monarch to conclude hostilities without losing face.
The siege is finally terminated on June 27, 1475.
The city’s inhabitants attribute the failure of the siege to the intervention of their patron saint, Quirinus of Neuss.
