Habsburg emperor Charles V in 1532 had ordered the Genoese admiral Andrea Doria to attack it as a diversion to the campaigns of the Little War in Hungary.
Doria had managed to capture the city, and to lay waste to the surrounding coast.
Ottoman Emperor Suleiman in spring 1533 sends sixty galleys to retake the city.
They blockade the harbor, but are defeated by Doria, highlighting the weakness of the Ottoman Navy at this time.
Suleyman calls upon the services of the corsair captain Hayreddin Barbarossa, who is aided by the outbreak of plague among the garrison and a particularly harsh winter.
The weakened Spanish garrison surrenders the fortress on April 1, 1534, and sails unharmed for Italy.
