August 1139 CE
Duke Roger next takes the city of Naples into his possession and makes it an integral part of the kingdom, ending the republican government which had continued after Duke Sergius' death.
The defeat of Sicily in the Battle of Rignano had had one positive effect for Roger: since Sergius had died heirless and the Neapolitan aristocracy cannot reach agreement as to who to support for the succession, Roger can establish direct control over the Duchy of Naples, nominating his son Alfonso as the new duke.
Under the new rulers, the city is administered by a compalazzo (palatine count), with little independence left to the Neapolitan patriciate.
In this period, Naples has a population of thirty thousand and yet receives its sustenance from the inland communities: commercial activities are mainly delegated to non-Neopolitans, mainly from Pisa and Genoa.
