Granted a royal pardon, Columbus has avoided…
May 1502 CE
Granted a royal pardon, Columbus has avoided a trial for the misgovernance of Santo Domingo.
Still seeking the Asian mainland, and backed once again by the Spanish government, he embarks on his fourth voyage to the new World, nominally in search of the Strait of Malacca to the Indian Ocean.
He leaves Cadiz on May 11, 1502, with his flagship Santa María and the vessels Gallega, Vizcaína, and Santiago de Palos.
Accompanied by his brother Bartolomeo and his thirteen-year-old son Fernando, he first sails to Arzila on the Moroccan coast to rescue Portuguese soldiers whom he has heard are under siege by the Moors.
