The Crusaders and the Conquest of Estremadura (1147–1148)
Following their victories at Santarém and Lisbon in 1147, the Crusaders continued to support Afonso I of Portugal in expanding his realm. With their aid, Portuguese forces captured Sintra, Almada, Palmela, and Setúbal, further dismantling Almoravid control in central Portugal.
As a reward for their service, many of these Flemish, Norman, English, Scottish, Frisian, and German Crusaderswere granted land in the newly conquered territories, where they settled and established families, contributing to the region’s cultural and demographic transformation.
With these victories, Estremadura was fully incorporated into Portugal, marking a crucial stage in the kingdom’s territorial consolidation and the broader Christian reconquest of Iberia.
