The Dos de Mayo Uprising and the Spanish Strategic Failures (1808)
The Dos de Mayo Uprising on May 2, 1808, sparked widespread resistance across Spain, forcing the French to retreat from their occupation to the Ebro River. However, despite this early success, the Spanish forces missed a crucial opportunity to expel the French entirely. A failure to appoint a Supreme Commander left Spain’s military forces operating independently, preventing the kind of coordinated strategy needed to capitalize on French weakness.
The Fragmented Spanish Armies and Napoleon’s Strategy
Spain’s forces were divided into three major armies:
- General Joaquín Blake’s army stationed along the north coast, actively engaging the French.
- General Francisco Javier Castaños’s army positioned near Tudela.
- General José Rebolledo de Palafox’s army around Zaragoza.
Blake had attempted to take the offensive but was defeated at Pancorbo on October 31, 1808. Meanwhile, Napoleon formulated a decisive strategy:
- His plan was to launch a strong attack toward Burgos, cutting off Blake’s army from the rest of the Spanish forces.
- He would then outflank the remaining Spanish armies, swinging north and south to encircle them.
- To lure the Spanish into remaining in exposed positions, Napoleon ordered his armies not to attack immediately, keeping them in a static posture while awaiting the right moment to strike.
The French Offensive and the Battle of Tudela (November 23, 1808)
During October and November 1808, Spanish forces remained in motion, but without strategic direction. Castaños, suffering from illness, left Palafox to direct operations, but Palafox proved indecisive.
On November 21, 1808, French forces launched their long-awaited offensive:
- Marshal Bon-Adrien Jeannot de Moncey’s III Corps crossed the Ebro at Logroño, advancing east toward Calahorra.
- Marshal Michel Ney’s VI Corps moved into the Upper Douro Valley, advancing toward Tudela.
- Castaños, recognizing the risk of encirclement, withdrew to Tudela to avoid being trapped between these two advancing French armies.
However, on November 23, 1808, Marshal Jean Lannes led a French assault at the Battle of Tudela, decisively defeating the Spanish army. The lack of coordination and leadership among Spanish forces allowed Napoleon’s forces to regain the initiative, dealing a major blow to the Spanish resistance.
