The Two Sicilies had elected to unite…
March 1861 CE
The Two Sicilies had elected to unite with Sardinia, which also absorbs the former Eastern Papal States of Umbria and the Marche.
Sardinia, under the leadership of the House of Savoy's Victor Emmanuel, had joined the fight against Russian in support of the allies in the Crimean War.
Victor Emmanuel, with British help, is rewarded for by being made King of Italy, which kingdom is officially proclaimed on March 17, 1861, by a parliament assembled in Turin.
The Italian peninsula, bar Venetia, Rome and the Western Papal States dominated by France, is now one kingdom.
Garibaldi, meanwhile, plots to capture the Papal States.
Mazzini refuses to take a seat in the Italian Parliament because of his uncanceled death sentence.
