The fateful voyage of two of Prince…
1420 CE to 1431 CE
The fateful voyage of two of Prince Henry the Navigator's captains, João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira, etched its mark on history in 1419.
A tumultuous storm swept them off course, eventually guiding them to an island they christened Porto Santo—Holy Harbor—a name born out of gratitude for their miraculous rescue from the clutches of shipwreck.
The following year, an expedition was dispatched to colonize this newfound land.
The valiant captains, accompanied by Bartolomeu Perestrello, raised the Portuguese flag and laid claim to the islands in the name of their beloved crown.
Thus began the settlement of these uncharted lands, around the years 1420 or 1425, as the pioneering spirits braved the unknown, propelled by an insatiable thirst for discovery.
