Ferdinand, a ruler of vast Habsburg monarchy demesnes, and soon to be elected Holy Roman Emperor, is quite upset by this calculated insult, but his intolerant policies in his own lands have left him in a weak position.
The Habsburg cause in the next couple of years would seem to suffer unrecoverable reverses.
The Protestant cause seemed to wax toward a quick overall victory.
The position of the Emperor in Bohemia, as in Lower and Upper Austria, is gradually becoming critical.
Searching for help, the Emperor tries to restore the League.
A meeting of several of the ecclesiastical Princes decides to reconstruct the League on its original basis.
