August 408 CE
Stilicho has news of the coup at Bononia (where he is probably waiting for Alaric).
His small escort of barbarians is led by Sarus, who rebels.
His Gothic troops massacre the Hunnic contingent in their sleep, and then withdraw towards the cities in which their families are billeted.
Stilicho orders that these troops should not be admitted, but, now without an army, he is forced to flee for sanctuary, promised his life, imprisoned by Honorius' orders, and beheaded on August 22.
His son Eucherius is put to death shortly thereafter, and Honorius terminates his union with Thermantia.
The division of the two partes imperii is now a permanent one.
