The Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis, under the terms of which Henry II renounces his hereditary claim to Milan, confirms Spain’s almost complete influence over Italy, both directly (through control of Milan, Naples, Sicily, Sardinia, and the State of Presidi) and indirectly (through dominance of the rulers of Tuscany, Genoa, and other minor states of northern Italy).
The Pope is also their natural ally.
The only truly independent entities on the Italian peninsula are Savoy and the Republic of Venice.
Henry, thus abandoning French claims to Italy, leaves the Spanish Habsburgs free to dominate the severely weakened Italian peninsula, which control is to last until the early eighteenth century.
