July 410 CE
Attalus returns to a hungry Rome and refuses to allow Druma, a Goth handpicked by Alaric, to command a second expedition against Africa.
Having thus alienated Alaric by his refusal to be merely the latter's puppet, Attalus is in summer 410 deposed as emperor by the man who had elevated him.
Alaric removes Attalus's crown and strips off his purple, sends them to Honorius, and attempts to negotiate again with the emperor.
