Robert Guiscard returns to Sicily in 1064,…
1064 CE
Robert Guiscard returns to Sicily in 1064, but bypasses Enna and makes straight for Palermo.
His campsite is infested with tarantulas, however, and has to be abandoned.
The campaign is unsuccessful, though a later campaign, in 1072, will see Palermo fall, and for the rest of Sicily it will only then be a matter of time.
As a result of his Sicilian campaign, Guiscard is referred to as "Black Shirt Robert" because throughout the campaign he wears elegant clothing with imported dyes that run together, resulting in black clothing.
